The tables below should give you the information you need to determine, of which an internet address is, that is where the server is located and what
type of institution stands behind the server. Depening where the server is located, a domain address is made up of several parts.

Europe and rest of the world (except USA) A domain address in Europe normal consists of three or four single domains. The top level domain (last domain), usually gives the country, in which the server is located. This usually is a two letter domain like at or uk. If the entire domain name consists of four domains, then the domain before the country domain, gives the type of institution, to whom the server belongs. If there are only three domains, then the server mostly belongs to either a governmental institutaion or is a commercial server. So here are some examples for domain names:

USA domains Usually a server in the USA has a domain name, that consists of three parts, where the top level domain (last one) identifies the type of organization. The following table explains these domains:

New top level domains for 97 A while ago the IAHC has announced new generic top level domains to be introduced for 1997. According to the IAHC these new domains, will not replace the old ones, rahter than be added to the international domains, like com, net and org. The new top level domains will be:
In addition to these new top level domains, new second level domains shall be introduced. An example of such a new second level domain could be .tm. as an indicator for a trademark. It's not yet said, when the new system will go into action, but it is expected that it will do so during 1997. Additional information Most of the servers follow the above mentioned rules. However, you will encounter domain names, which do not follow these rules. Why ? Often this are very special sites, owned by special and rich institutions. |
